The resort takes its name from an ancient tower that was built here in 1673 by order of the Papal State. It stands at the mouth of an old, dried-up river from whose bed locals once extracted stones to build their houses. These stones afforded it the name “Torre della Pedriera”. From the outset, it was a particularly important settlement as the tower controlled maritime activity and defended the coast from Saracen pirates and Turkish invasions.
